EXIT 21

Exit is the final stage in the training of ESAC students: a series of short numbers, as diverse as the personalities of these young artists. Singularity, inventiveness, and high standards: this is what is expected of them within the school, and in the professional world where they are now entering. You will be the first to judge their prowess!

REAL // UGLY // SPARKLING

Third year collective workshop staged by Gaël Santisteva and the Gilbert & Stock company.

Going through an art school course is a bit like entering a fermentation phase.
We could playfully make an analogy between the deprivation of oxygen necessary for fermentation and the setting in specific conditions induced by the intensive learning of an artistic discipline.
In both cases a process of transformation begins.
This mutation can portend the worst as well as the best and even alternate from one to the other in an unpredictable way, a bit like when we make lacto-fermented preserves and we seek a delicious, wonderful, excellent result.
Based on this observation, we tried to explore the question of ugliness, of the unwelcome, of the unsuitable, and to accept these unexpected things with derision.
We mirrored all of this with the unvarnished reality of a life of training, without ever forgetting the brilliance of certain flashes specific to the circus, and we managed together with the 18 students of this promotion to build a stage object:

REAL // UGLY // SPARKLING
REAL // UGLY // BRILLIANT

EXIT 14

Exit is the final stage of training for final year students. In the form of a series of numbers, proposals submitted by students demonstrate the creativity of a booming sector. Each circus act combines a unique artistic approach with the highest technicality.

FOLK

Folk is a project about reality, derision and essential action. Artists and spectators occupy the empty space together and the “ceremony” can begin. The apparatus becomes the adored totem, the central axis of the celebration. The deities are summoned and open the door to trance and suspension. The bull and the wrestler dive into a frenzied dance. Magic of gesture at the heart of circus action.

IT’S NOW

It’s Now is an invitation to pause time, to look, to feel the space and then to get involved. Place the apparatus on the ground and compose. In search of harmony, made of rhythms and colors, breaths and bodies in apnea, the white page fills little by little, images appear and dissolve into ordered chaos. A crossing from North to South, to the rhythm of the songs of the Pashiva Choir, mixing additional writing and performance.

If your eye were sharper, you would see everything in motion

ÉSAC, Cirqu’Conflex and the Hendrick Van Der Zee company (HVDZ) are inviting residents of Anderlecht and non-profit organizations to create together a film-show called “If your eye were sharper, you would see everything moving”
The concept of vigil is the starting point of this creation. The vigil is a 15-day residency where the artistic team meets the inhabitants of Anderlecht, records testimonies, offers artistic interventions – made of words, gestures, and images – and integrates their daily landscapes and their places of life. The artists will roam the streets, knock on doors, read texts, dance in the street and invite the public to attend the show born from all these encounters…
The goal is to create a show with the second year ESAC students, ensure the transmission of Vigil techniques to the students and produce a film show at the end of the residency. A film with and for the people met during the residency.
A show will be presented to you from January 30 to February 3, 2019 at L’ESAC. It will be the result of a 10-day residency and will combine acrobatics, texts, dances, videos and meetings.
You can follow the adventures and articles of this creation on the HVDZ company blog:

BANG!

A show directed by Claudio Stellato
and Nicanor de Elia with the third year students
from the Higher School of Circus Arts of Brussels

Bang! appears as a series of brief sequences,
without a guiding thread other than the bodies of the performers, pushed to the limit. Limit states, excessive physical demands, contradictory action imperatives, are the key words of these acts on the border of performance. To try to produce, in a dramaturgy emanating from the body, all oppositions of strength and fragility, resistance and surrender, endurance and exhaustion, a burlesque of the extreme, a humor (necessarily a little dark) of mistreated identity.

With: Sergio Alvarez Pardo, Diego Arias Guirles, Joris Baltz, Josefina Castro Pereyra Soler, Oscar de Nova de la Fuente, Laureline Dubois, Julieta Martin, Audrey Minaud, Sergio Ortiz Cabrera, Guillermo Pastor Lopez Beltran, Hanan Vandenberghe, Violette Wauters, Léah Wolff, Juho Yrjola

TUTTI

Tutti follows the paper score of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, on which the disciplines of second year Esac students are distributed. These are in turn solo violin, viola, cello, harpsichord, throughout the twelve movements scrupulously followed… except certain movements, placed in a dramatic situation in a more raw and wild manner. And with Charlie Degotte on orchestration, expect this so-called serious music to make you laugh a lot!
